Multidisciplinary Definition

Humans have been through long strife to advance in every field of life. Curiosity and man’s inquisitive nature have taken all these achievements. Man has discovered many mysteries and secrets of the earth using his inquisitive nature. That is why our modern history is full of astonishing advancements and magnificent inventions. This multidisciplinary stuff is related to multiple types of study.

We are on par excellence academically. Still, we have a long way to go. Along with scientific developments and inventions, we are approaching deepening the concept of globalization and liberalization. They are also raising problems and challenges.

These concerns are now the subject matter of various disciplines. No one can find the solution to all these issues by studying a single discipline.  Each discipline calls for concrete efforts. Each discipline has its rules and regulations. Rather each study part is necessarily transgressed to the periphery of other disciplines. This is the need of the hour!

Multidisciplinary Research

Research generally refers to the search for knowledge. It is a search for information relevant to a specific topic. Research is a systemized method consisting of defining a problem, collecting the facts, formulating a hypothesis, analyzation, and reaching conclusions. Research is a tedious march of discovery. It is a movement humans make from unknown to known. This is a voyage of probe to attain a full understanding of facts.

Not much literature is available on the characteristics of research collaboration with different disciplines. Arguably, definitions of multidisciplinarity, “interdisciplinarity” or “trans-disciplinarity” are vague. Collaboration and cross-fertilization between the disciplines provide distinctions between these concepts.  That is why you can call multidisciplinary research the subset of research collaboration.

Multidisciplinary research is a quest to make the unknown known involving specialized branches of learning. All disciplines aim to achieve a common aim taking necessary aid from other disciplines.

Multidisciplinary research is an investigative approach to a problem for ascertaining the hypothesis by combining different academic approaches, fields, or methods. It can also be defined as a systemic method to ensure an original contribution to the existing knowledge. Several disciplines and methods combine to reach this knowledge.

Multidisciplinary Research studies address actual problems with a focus on reaching a solution. It tends to be applied, action, or policy-oriented.

Multidisciplinary Approach

A multidisciplinary approach means knowledge of several disciplines is combined to be given to a problem. They are supplementary to one another in a way that reaches a clear-cut conclusion. It should be free from branding as isolated or partial. However, individual findings are brought together cumulatively. That is why modern research is more multidisciplinary.

An increase in multi-disciplinary approaches shows the dominance of problem-solving. The growing research is aimed at applying knowledge from various disciplines to find a solution. Most problems are multifaceted and call for research combining multiple disciplines.

Current problems are also complex, which is the key reason behind the increasing multi-disciplinary approach. An effective multidisciplinary process is likely to include soft human skills such as teamwork, leadership, and tolerance of difference. This leads to the call of a team of individuals from various disciplines to reach a common ground after studying the problem.
